Distance Learning and Telehealth Grant Funding at HCS

Great news!   The US Department of Agriculture has awarded a federal grant to the Finger Lakes Community College to support schools in Ontario, Wayne, Seneca and Yates counties with videoconferencing equipment that can be used for college classes and telehealth visits. In addition to HCS, the following school districts will be part of the distance learning network: Bloomfield, Dundee, Honeoye, Lyons, North Rose-Wolcott, Penn Yan, Red Creek, Seneca Falls, Sodus and Williamson.

We anticipate that the Honeoye Central School District will benefit from high-quality distance education in numerous and varied ways. We envision boundless opportunities including, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Access to greater menu of courses/electives for our students, such as:
    • Dual credit courses/shared courses that are currently not provided due to low-density enrollment.
    • Expansion of STEM and computer science classes.
  • Enhanced levels of mental health, suicide prevention, and substance abuse counseling and education.
  • Inclusion of additional instructional modalities for Tier 1 instruction such as guest speakers, virtual field trips, and global classroom collaboration.
  • Access to additional professional learning opportunities for instructional and operational staff.

HCS is slated to receive two mobile stations which will be housed 1) in our Career Cafe, and 2) in a conference room off of the Secondary Library.  It is expected that videoconferencing equipment will arrive and be installed in the late Spring of 2024.  In the meantime, the district will participate in regional collaboration around the promise and potential of this opportunity.  We hope to launch initial Distance Learning programming in the Fall of 2024.

Special thanks to the following internal and external stakeholder groups who contributed letters of support for this venture:

  • HCS administrative team members.
  • HCS teachers,
  • HCS alumni and current students,
  • PTA, and
  • Honeoye Lake Rotary Club.

On behalf of the entire HCS team, we appreciate your ongoing support and partnership in advocacy for our students.  As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or thoughts about the information contained in this communication, or otherwise. Be safe and be well... Enjoy the last few weeks before the holiday!

Sincerely,
E. Bridget Ashton
