This Friday, October 10, 2008, members of the Richmond Fire Department provided our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade students with an opportunity to view equipment demonstrations, climb on board an ambulance and ladder truck, and learn about fire safety as part of National Fire Prevention Week. The Richmond Fire Department also generously provided each of our boys and girls with a fireman's hat, a fire safety coloring book with crayons, and stickers. Please browse through the photo gallery above to see images of the firefighters working with our primary grade students. On behalf of the primary grade students and staff, I'd like to thank the men and women of the Richmond Fire Department for educating our students on fire safety, the important role that firefighters play in keeping our community safe, and the use of several impressive pieces of equipment. Thank you firefighters for all you do! Sincerely,
Michael D. Bastian
Hallway Scene Complete!
Please scroll through the accompanying photos or come into school for an up-close look at the autumn scene located along the hallway outside the school cafeteria. This week, students in grades K-5 contributed examples of or thoughts regarding some of the positive behaviors that our school community has identified and targeted for this school year. Special thanks to Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Pezzimenti, Mrs. Nagy, Miss Nourse, Mrs. Stumbo, and others for coordinating this effort and getting this display up for all to enjoy! This will be a great seasonally-appropriate visual reminder of our commitment to modeling and supporting positive behaviors here at Honeoye Elementary. Be sure to look for an article about this week's PBIS "Harvesting Positive Behaviors" assembly in an upcoming issue of the Honeoye Herald and in the related story posted elsewhere on this elementary web page.
Sincerely,
Michael D. Bastian
Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports PBIS Kick-off: October 6, 2008 "Harvesting Positive Behaviors"
October 6, 2008 Dear Parents, This morning, students and staff at Honeoye Elementary School participated in a "Harvesting Positive Behaviors" assembly and rotated through three learning stations which identified and modeled behaviors we believe are essential to maintaining a safe, caring learning environment here at school. These activities served as the kick-off for our Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) efforts for this school year. Throughout the course of this week we will continue our efforts to "Harvest Positive Behaviors" in the elementary school by asking every student and staff member to add his or her own example of a positive school behavior to an autumn harvest scene located outside the school cafeteria. PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports is a proactive, comprehensive, systemic and individualized continuum of support designed to provide opportunities to all students, including students with disabilities, for achieving social and learning success, while preventing problem behaviors. PBIS is a research-based intervention model being used with great success in a growing number of schools around the nation. Honeoye Elementary began implementing its own PBIS initiative three years ago. This year, the school's PBIS committee will continue working with our school's staff and students to identify, model, teach, support, and recognize positive student behavior. The PBIS program at Honeoye Elementary in based on the following concepts/beliefs:
Please take a moment to talk with your child about this morning's assembly. In the next few months, look for information from school regarding the school's PBIS approach. The Elementary School's webpage will contain information pertaining to our PBIS efforts as we move forward. Lastly, be on the look out at home for "positive passes", dog bone certificates, and stories of how your child was "caught being" or "doing" good! Be sure to stop in next week and see the completed "Harvesting Positive Behaviors" scene in the Elementary School's main hallway between the two cafeteria entrances. Sincerely,
Michael D. Bastian ![]()
