- AP biology students went to the Life
Sciences Learning Center at the University of Rochester. Students
used polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) techniques
to study proteins isolated from several types of fish. Bioinformatics
will be used as a tool to help establish the evolutionary relationships
among the fish species. Students will use the known amino acid
sequences of several fish proteins, and consider the species'
phylogenetic connections to predict which species will have similar
banding patterns on the SDS-PAGE gels.
- Several Sixth graders built their own volcanoes which
they erupted in class. This was one of many extra credit opportunities
in their science class.
