Welcome to Honeoye Elementary Library!
Where every day is library day!

Librarian: Miss Deal  // Library Assistant: Mrs. Behil

The Honeoye Elementary Library Media Center is located in center of the Honeoye school. With that in mind, it can be the heart of a learning community, as it serves the students, faculty, and administration. We hold approximately 14,500 materials - including books, videos, and magazines. Our library is automated with the Mandarin circulation system and online public access catalog (OPAC). Available in the library are nine Macintosh computers and a SMART Board. Additionally, we have a laptop cart and printer available for classroom use. These internet accessible computers are used for research as well as for the library catalog. Our library is a instructional library which allows for students to work independently, in small group, or in whole group simultaneously.

PROGRAMS

The library operates a service club called the Library Club. It is open to students in the fifth grade, as chosen by teacher recommendation and per a student’s desire to be involved. Students come each Monday after school. Students learn more about why the library was created and organized the way it is, and spend time completing various duties including shelving books and caring for shelves as well as various library activities. Each student is given opportunities to share responsibilities and decision-making skills while learning about working together to help the school community grow.

During the Fall and Spring, the Elementary Library hosts a Scholastic Book Fair. This allows us to encourage reading and provide families with the opportunity to purchase books for home libraries, as well as help build and support individual classroom collections and the library. Keep an eye out for fliers with added information as well as information on how you can volunteer your time to help make each Book Fair a success!

Campbell's Labels for Education & Box Tops for Education is a program which allows students to take part in earning money for the school library and the many opportunities we offer. Students bring in their Box Top labels or Campbell's UPC labels and each class amount is recorded. The funds from both help with the celebration of reading during April's "Honeoye Reads" Month, both with author visits as well as t-shirts and promotional events. Additionally, this allows us to celebrate participation through providing those classes who bring in the most to have ice cream (one winner per grade level) or pizza (one winner) three times a year.

BoxTops for Education pays 10 cents per boxtop coupon. For a complete list of products that carry the BoxTop coupon visit: www.boxtops4education.com.

Campbell's Labels for Education provides points based on the number of labels deposited. We redeem the points to earn FREE stuff for our school! For more information about this program and a list of participating products, visit the website at www.labelsforeducation.com.

As a part of Rotary International's literacy theme, the Honeoye Lake Rotary Club encourages students in third through fifth grade to participate in a reading program entitled Rotary Reading Rally. Students are given the opportunity to earn certificates each year and to receive a plaque when after reaching 30 books. Occasionally one or two students will receive the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty (ABCD) award, for those who push to read over 60 books.

As a part of motivational efforts, students who participate are able to share their projects or talk about their books during a "Lunch in the Library" pizza celebration. This celebration is hosted and attended by Rotarians and special guests.
Rotarians will record the titles of the books read on a master sheet for each student, which prevents the repetition of books being read and reported. Certificates are distributed at the end of the year pizza party. Plaques are awarded in the June Awards Assembly.

Students may read both fiction and non-fiction books that are appropriate for their reading level. For each book read, a project of some type must be completed as well as a form, available in the library or classroom. The project plan must be signed by a parent or teacher indicating that the student has truly read the book.

During the 2008-2009 School Year, students read 1,274 books. Which was an increase from the 1,086 books in 2007-2008. Let's see if we can exceed that amount and reach 2,000!!

See below for sheets you can download and print at home!
