It was Science on Seneca on May 27 and several Honeoye students were fortunate to participate in the event on the waters of Seneca Lake.
Students from Mrs. Boyea’s and Mrs. Sacchitella’s middle school classes were on Seneca Lake with the program through the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. During this unique hands-on learning experience, students boarded the R/V William Scandling, a 65-foot research vessel, and explored Seneca Lake as environmental scientists.
Students collected and analyzed data related to water quality, aquatic life, lake sediments and other environmental factors. Working alongside experts, they used scientific equipment to investigate the health of the lake and learned how researchers monitor and protect one of the Finger Lakes's most valuable natural resources.
The trip provided an exciting opportunity for students to apply classroom science skills in a real-world setting while gaining a deeper appreciation for the importance of environmental stewardship.
We are grateful to the Finger Lakes Institute and Hobart and William Smith Colleges for providing this memorable educational experience.
